Coin Opera
After the now defunct Los Angeles lo fi trio Okiread split up in the late 90s, singer/songwriter P. Blue Zusman started making 4 track recordings under the moniker "Coin Opera". These early recordings were marked by spare arrangements mixed with clever wordplay that had literary leanings towards both the drunken romantic scribes of yore, as well as The Beats. In some instances, a song could be a quiet tale of loss and hope, while in others, tunes roar and soar with what can best be described as a kind of runaway madness. Placed side by side, this sad beauty, crossed with this simple mayhem-created what would become the cornerstone for all of C/O's music. Though he was still earning a sometimes living as an actor (Armed and Innocent, Best Men, Full on Empty), the tape machine seemed to be the vehicle most suited to capture his unique point of view and brand of storytelling.
At the turn of the Millennium, C/O decided to take his act on the road, and packing up an Underwood Typewriter case with notebooks full of song lyrics and ideas, he headed east to New York City. While there, he has subsequently performed both solo and with a backing band, throughout the city's many fine musical establishments - such as Pianos's, the Knitting Factory, Club Midway, and Lit Lounge, to name but a few.
In the summer of 2005, PBZ returned back to his long lost LA to record an album's worth of material with his longtime friend Adam Siegel (M. Ward, Bodies Of Water) engineering and co-producing. With the additional help of mutual buddy Byron Reynolds (Possum Dixon, Sea Wolf) adding drums on a few tracks, Coin Opera's "What Went Wrong With The Right" was given birth. Look for "WWWWTR" to be officially released on the Umbrella Etiquette imprint in October 2007.
