Along with his renowned ability as a bass player and a band leader, Berklee College of Music graduate, Derek Nievergelt, possesses a formidable songwriting talent. Whether it be rock, jazz, hip hop or country, Derek brings fresh ideas and technique to the table, allowing new conceptions of what music is and can be to come to light. Its no surprise that he has studied under jazz luminaries Ron Carter and Ray Brown, as well as at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the New England Conservatory (where he still teaches) and has toured the world with Herbie Hancock and Clark Terry.
As a member of the Terence Blanchard Quintet, Derek recorded the Grammy nominated album "Let's Get Lost,” featuring Diana Krall, Diane Reeves, and Cassandra Wilson. He was a featured performer in Spike Lee's film Bamboozled, has recorded with the Nublu orchestra conducted by Butch Morris, and most recently with Coldplay on their upcoming album.
Be sure to check Derek out live in one of his many incarnations. In addition to performing with talents like Jeremy Pelt, Stanley Jordan, and Bobby Watson, Derek plays with regularly with Pyeng Threadgill, Noam Weinstein and the Benny Lackner Trio.
We’re ecstatic to have Derek in the family and wish him nothing but complete success in the future.
